As a founding member, you also get to shape the future of Mendara

Women who have experienced a difficult or traumatic birth have been massively underserved by conventional support. The women who join Mendara now have a real opportunity to shape the future of guided peer support and to help us build something that can help even more people.

You’ll have the opportunity to provide feedback directly to our founder and be part of campaigns, events, and community moments as they happen. The women who join now are not just members. They are part of changing what support looks like for every woman who comes after them.

What our community says:

Women who attend 3+ guided Mendara sessions report feeling better day-to-day, more confident in caring for themselves and their baby, and less alone in their experience.

Chair of the Birth Trauma Association

I came to the role of BTA chair and volunteer manager due to my own experience of a twin pregnancy which was complicated by a life-changing placental abruption, emergency caesarean birth, and severe postpartum complications.

With my third pregnancy I was hospitalised at 20 weeks with sepsis, and spent time in intensive care. I first realised I had postnatal depression four months after, but it took a further year before I reached out and was, gently, told I had PTSD. I ultimately credit EMDR therapy with saving my life, as well as the Birth Trauma Association, who provided a space for me to tell my story. I want to help create a space for others to feel less alone and tell their story. There's power in taking back our stories but healing is possible.

Session Facilitator

I experienced a difficult lead up to my first birth, including a severe PUPPP rash, multiple ‘stretch & sweeps’ which I experienced as extremely painful and violating, and fourth degree tears. I didn't realise for some time that I was experiencing birth trauma. It is important for me to be able to offer support to others in a similar situation as it's an area where gratitude and grief, delight and devastation can sit all at once, which can feel very overwhelming when navigating parenthood. A little support can go a long way.

Our Story

Delivering a safe space for processing a difficult or traumatic birth

1 in 3 women describe their birth as traumatic. Many never get the chance to process what happened. Mendara started because we believe this needs to change.

We partnered with the Birth Trauma Association and began running small, facilitated group sessions for women processing difficult or traumatic births.

Many of them told us that they had been carrying their experience around for months, sometimes years, and attending those sessions was the first time they felt like they weren't alone. That what happened to them mattered. They also told us they wanted more accessible ongoing support between sessions - so we knew the next stage was to build an app.

We are still in the early stages of building what Mendara will become. The women who join now will help shape it, and will be part of changing how the world supports women after the most transformational period of their lives.

Mendara is developed alongside the Birth Trauma Association, the only charity in the UK solely dedicated to supporting women and families who have experienced a traumatic birth.

Founded and run by women with lived experience of birth trauma, the BTA supports parents and families, campaigns to improve maternity care, and engages health professionals through education and research. They were the lead organisation advising on the 2024 parliamentary inquiry into birth trauma, and have been supporting families for over 20 years.

If you are looking for additional support, the BTA has a wealth of free resources, a supportive community, and peer supporters who have all been through a traumatic birth themselves.
